Samacheer Kalvi is the uniform school education system followed by Tamil Nadu state board schools. Government, aided and most matriculation schools that teach the state syllabus all work from the same Samacheer Kalvi textbooks, prepared by the Tamil Nadu SCERT, approved by the School Education Department and printed by the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation (TNTB&ESC). The 2026-27 editions are in use across Class 1 to Class 12.
தமிழ்நாடு அரசுப் பள்ளிகளில் சமச்சீர் கல்வி பாடநூல்கள் 1 முதல் 12 ஆம் வகுப்பு வரை பயன்பாட்டில் உள்ளன.

What Samacheer Kalvi means
Samacheer Kalvi — the Uniform System of School Education — is what replaced the earlier split between the matriculation, Anglo-Indian and state board syllabi in Tamil Nadu. The point of it is uniformity: whichever government or aided school a child attends in the state, the syllabus, the textbook and the public examination are the same. A book downloaded for one school therefore works in another, and the yearly book list is identical across the state for a given class.
Because the system is centralised, there is one authorised book per subject and class. Anything sold alongside it as a guide is a private publication that supplements the textbook; it is not the book the question paper is set from.
Which subjects, and how many
The subject set widens as a child moves up the school:
- Class 1 and 2: Tamil, English, Mathematics and Environmental Science — four subjects, kept small on purpose.
- Class 3 to 8: Tamil, English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science — five subjects. Science and Social Science begin at Class 3, not later.
- Class 9 and 10: the same five subjects, which are also the five papers of the SSLC public examination.
- Class 11 and 12: the two languages plus four optional subjects, taken from the Science, Commerce or Arts group, or from the vocational stream.
Term-wise books and annual books
The books are not all published the same way, and this catches parents out at the start of the year:
- Classes 1 to 8 are published term-wise — a Term 1, Term 2 and Term 3 book for most subjects, so the book a child carries changes during the year.
- Classes 9 to 12 come as a single annual volume per subject.
Both formats are available as free PDFs, Tamil medium and English medium separately, on the class pages linked below.
Where to get every book free
KalviMani keeps each class together on one page, with the Tamil and English medium files listed side by side, so a parent or teacher does not have to hunt through the state corporation’s site. Start from the class you need:
Class 1 · Class 2 · Class 3 · Class 4 · Class 5 · Class 6 · Class 7 · Class 8 · Class 9 · Class 10 · Class 11 · Class 12
If you would rather see one subject across every class — to compare how a topic builds from Class 6 to Class 12, for instance — the subject hubs collect them: Tamil, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Physical Education.
How to read the books
- The exercises are the examination. Public examination questions are set from the prescribed book, including the end-of-chapter exercises. A guide explains a chapter; it is not the source the paper is drawn from.
- The PDF is the printed book. The digital edition is the same pages in the same order, in both mediums. Nothing is added or removed, which is why a downloaded copy is a fair substitute for the printed one.
- Check the year on the cover. Revisions happen chapter by chapter, so a book printed for an earlier year can be one revision behind. The safe check is to compare the chapter list against the school’s book list for the current year.
- Keep both mediums if you are preparing for a competitive examination. The Tamil edition carries the Tamil technical terms, and competitive papers increasingly use them.
Where to go next
- Study materials — notes, guides and question banks, grouped by class and subject.
- SSLC question papers and Plus Two question papers — the past papers for the two public examinations.
- Government orders and circulars — the syllabus, academic calendar and book-related notices that decide what is taught in a given year.
Frequently asked questions
Are Samacheer Kalvi books free?
Yes. The Tamil Nadu government issues the printed textbooks free to students in government and aided schools, and the digital editions can be downloaded free from official sources.
Is the syllabus the same in all Tamil Nadu schools?
It is the same for every school that follows the state board. Schools affiliated to CBSE or ICSE follow a different syllabus and different books.
Where can I download the Class 10 Samacheer books?
The class-wise pages on this site list the Tamil and English medium PDFs for Class 10, and the SSLC section carries the matching study materials and question papers.
Are the 2026-27 books different from last year?
The subject set stays the same; revisions are made chapter by chapter when the syllabus is updated. Always match the year printed on the book to the year the school is teaching.
Is a guide book enough without the textbook?
No. Public examination questions are set from the prescribed textbook, so the textbook is the base and a guide is only a supplement.
