The Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB), Tamil Nadu recruits teachers and teacher-educators for the state’s government and aided schools and for teacher-training institutions. Clearing the TET is only the eligibility step; the recruitment examination that follows is what turns eligibility into a posting. Because the Board runs several different recruitments, the pattern is tied to the post rather than to a single common paper.

Which posts TRB recruits for

The Teachers Recruitment Board runs a number of separate recruitments rather than one common examination. The recurring ones are:

  • Post Graduate Assistant — higher secondary subject teachers in the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Educational Service, requiring a postgraduate degree in the subject with B.Ed.
  • Physical Director Grade I and Computer Instructor Grade I — recruited through the same Higher Secondary Educational Service channel.
  • Secondary Grade Teacher and B.T. Assistant — the elementary and middle school teacher posts, for which TET is part of the qualification.
  • Special Teachers and Minority Language teacher posts, which carry their own syllabus documents.
  • Block Educational Officer — a promotional and recruitment post within elementary education administration.
  • Lecturers in SCERT and in government teacher-education institutions.

Each of these has a separate syllabus published on the Board’s site, so “the TRB syllabus” is not one document — it is one document per post.

What the Post Graduate Assistant paper is made of

The largest of the TRB recruitments takes Post Graduate Assistants, Physical Education Directors Grade I and Computer Instructors Grade I into the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary Educational Service. The syllabus the Board publishes for it is not a single document — it is split into three parts, and a candidate sits all three.

  • A subject paper in the subject being applied for. The Board publishes a separate syllabus document for each of thirteen subjects:

Tamil · English · Mathematics · Physics · Chemistry · Botany · Zoology · History · Geography · Economics · Political Science · Commerce and Accountancy · Physical Education

  • General Knowledge — a common paper for every candidate, whatever the subject.
  • Education Methodology — also common to all candidates, and the part that candidates from a pure subject background most often underestimate.

The syllabus documents carry the SCERT imprint and are dated 2025-2026, which is how you can tell whether a printed guide you are holding is current. Each recruitment notification then states how many questions are set, how they are marked and how long the paper runs — those figures are specific to the cycle and are not printed in the syllabus itself.

The General Knowledge syllabus, unit by unit

The General Knowledge paper is framed in ten units:

  1. History of India — Indus Valley Civilisation, the Vedic period, Buddhism and Jainism, the Mauryan and Gupta empires, the Delhi Sultanate, Vijayanagara, the Mughals and Marathas, the arrival of Europeans and the freedom struggle.
  2. History of Tamil Nadu — Sangam literature, the Pallavas, the Imperial Cholas, the later Pandyas, the Nayaks and their contribution to art and architecture, the Palayakar revolt, the Justice Party, the Self-Respect Movement and the Dravidian Movement.
  3. Indian Polity — the Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, Centre-State relations, the judiciary, empowerment of women and the rights of transgender persons.
  4. Geography — the physical geography of India, the distribution of natural resources, and phenomena such as earthquakes, tsunamis and cyclones.
  5. General Science — scientific temper, the main concepts of life science, evolution, nutrition, health and hygiene, human diseases, environment and ecology.
  6. Current Affairs and Sports — recent national and international sporting achievements.
  7. Indian Economy — planning, mobilisation of resources, growth, development and employment.
  8. Science and Technology — recent inventions, and indigenisation.
  9. Aptitude and Mental Ability — simplification, percentage and the standard reasoning types.
  10. Abbreviations — the acronyms of national and international bodies and programmes.

Units 6, 7, 8 and 10 are the ones that go stale fastest, and they are also the cheapest marks on the paper. Units 1 to 5 are the school syllabus revisited.

The Education Methodology syllabus

Education Methodology is a full paper in its own right, and it is where a candidate who has only ever studied their own subject loses ground. Its ten units are:

  1. Perspectives of Education — universalisation of elementary education, the RTE Act 2009, Samagra Shiksha, RUSA, inclusive education, and the commissions and committees in education.
  2. Philosophical and Sociological Foundations of Education — the schools of thought from idealism to pragmatism, and the social bases of education.
  3. History and Culture of Tamil Nadu — its historical development and the role of social and political movements.
  4. Childhood and Adolescence — the psychology of the school-age learner.
  5. Learning and Teaching — the learner, the learning process and learning characteristics.
  6. Intelligence and Personality — psychological attributes and their measurement.
  7. Educational Evaluation — test, measurement, assessment and evaluation, continuing and comprehensive evaluation, blueprints, scoring keys, item analysis, reliability and assessment tools.
  8. Management and Administration — the principles of management and their application to schools.
  9. Curriculum Design and Development — curriculum patterns and principles.
  10. Instructional and Educational Technology — including Bloom’s taxonomy and its classroom use.

Unit 7 is the most technical of the ten — item difficulty and discrimination, reliability, and the construction of a question paper — and it is examined in that detail.

What to study from

Two levels of material are involved, and they are not interchangeable.

  • The subject paper is set at degree and postgraduate level. The prescribed university textbooks for the subject at that level are the source, not the school book. For a Physics or Chemistry candidate that means the standard degree texts, and for Tamil or English it means the literature and grammar covered in the degree course.
  • General Knowledge is school level plus current affairs. The state board books carry units 1 to 5 — Class 12 textbooks are enough for history, polity, geography and general science — and the rest comes from a daily newspaper.
  • Use the material already on this site. TRB study materials collects the notes and question banks for these recruitments, TET study materials covers the eligibility test that comes first, and TNPSC study materials carries the General Studies material that overlaps the General Knowledge paper.
  • Then work the Board’s own papers. TRB publishes model question papers and previous question papers with answer keys for most recruitments, and the SCERT syllabus documents themselves are free downloads.

How the selection works

The usual sequence is a written examination followed by certificate verification. The written paper is objective and subject-specific: a Post Graduate Assistant candidate is examined mainly in the postgraduate subject they are applying to teach, together with an education or methodology component, while the Secondary Grade Teacher and B.T. Assistant papers are pitched at the level of the subject they will teach.

The precise pattern — number of questions, marks and duration — is published in the notification for each recruitment. That is not a formality: the Board has run different patterns for different posts, so a candidate preparing from last cycle’s paper may be preparing the wrong shape of examination.

TET and recruitment are two different steps

This is the single most misunderstood part of the process for school-teaching posts. TET is the eligibility test; clearing it puts a candidate on the list of people who may be appointed as a teacher. The recruitment examination is what actually decides the appointment, and it is a separate written examination conducted by the Board for a specific set of vacancies.

A candidate therefore sits, in sequence: TET for eligibility, then the recruitment examination for the post, then certificate verification. Preparing for one is not preparing for the other.

How to prepare

  • Read the notification for your post. The syllabus is printed in full inside it, and it is the only reliable scope statement.
  • Start from the Board’s own syllabus page. The TRB publishes a separate syllabus document for each recruitment, and for the Secondary Grade Teacher and B.T. Assistant posts those documents run to the subject level.
  • Revise the subject you will teach. The paper is weighted heavily towards it; the education and methodology portion is the smaller half.
  • Work the model papers. The Board publishes model question papers and previous question papers with answer keys.
